The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020) Review: A Killer Fun Time (Written By Josh Staats)

 

I recently watched The Babysitter: Killer Queen, which is a new Netflix original film, that is also a sequel to 2017’s The Babysitter. The movie is one of those comedy/horror style films, which helps itself stand out by not being a horror movie copy and paste factory that feels like most of the last ten to twenty years have been. It is lighthearted with the scares, and what is scary, is almost comical in of itself. Actors and actresses in this film are Judah Lewis, Samara Weaving, Jenna Ortega, and Emily Alyn Lind to just name a few. Directing is McG (AKA Joseph McGinty Nichol), He has done Charlies Angels: Full Throttle, Terminator Salvation, and We are the Marshall.

The things I find that work, charming, or extravagantly awesome in this film are the pacing, humor, and the story being told. Pacing wise, this film I think hits the nail on the head, where it slows down for those golden cinema moments that are trying to get the viewer some sort of story, or excellent moments that make you go awe struck, but then make scenes that don’t seem that fun or important, still feel important, but don’t waste your time. Plus the action of this movie happens what seems like almost immediately.

The humor in the film is fantastic, with no jokes really being super blunt or obvious, but still able to make you laugh when they are, including a call back to the first movie about something that wasn’t happening then, but did happen in this film. The funny moments are used in good effect to break up some of the horror elements, to make the movie not feel as scary as it could be, but the intent of the film I feel, is not to be the best scarier horror movie, but to be the best scary horror movie, with intentional comedy, which I think this film does a very good job of doing.

 

The story is a fairly creative one that I think most people can at least get behind if not enjoy. What I mean by this is the first movie has laid down some excellent ground work (without getting into to much detail) about at least what the characters do to cause this trouble, and to some extent stop it. The second movie builds off of all these great ideas, and while not perfect, is great still at expanding the universe, and it causes great twists to happen.

 

So what did I think of this film? Well I think it was pretty great, the cast, the director and from what I can tell, the vision of the film was met greatly. Sure, this film isn’t a straight up horror movie, and is a bit campy, but it helps make it stronger as a whole and I would gladly recommend the whole series so far to anyone who was looking for something fun to watch!
