The Falcon and The Winter Solider (Episode 1) Review (Written By Hussain Alokaily)
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the latest MCU Disney Plus series that is directed by Kari Skogland and stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Miki Ishikawa, and Adepero Oduye. The story revolves around the two titular characters as Falcon and the Winter Soldier are a mismatched duo who team up for a global adventure that will test their survival skills -- as well as their patience.
2 weeks after the very first MCU content of both Phase 4 and Disney + has our next chapter of the MCU being The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Being a more direct chapter in the MCU and its potential for the future had this series become my most anticipated Disney Plus series coming from Marvel. The Falcon and Winter Solider are really great characters in the movies and their moments together within the MCU were some of the highlights of their films. This showed real potential to expand upon both characters and really flesh them out. After thankfully having access to the first episode of the series, I am happy to report that the series is off to a very promising start!
What immediately struck out about the episode is how different it is from WandaVision which really shows the creative potential of the MCU on Disney + as a whole. WandaVison was stylistically a sitcom for a lot of the show which immediately makes them more grounded, political thriller tone to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stick out that much more. The episode also hits different from WandaVision as soon as it starts as it opens with a rather impressive action sequence that that is both fun and thrilling. Without saying much, it involves a lot of creative choreography, ideas and according to the director, a decent amount of practical stunts.
What the episode also establishes so well is the direction both Sam Wilson and Bucky Barns will have to go through in the series. After the awesome action sequence, it takes time to establish both character’s conflicts as it shows the problems both characters have to deal with. This establishes a direction the series is going to head to where both characters are gonna get so much character development to them which is an exciting direction. In terms of performances, both actors do a great job embodying their characters. Anthony Mackie in the films is very charismatic and here he is no different in the role. However, Mackie is given more time to show some subtly in his performance which is something I’m excited to see further. As for Sebastian Stanm, he does a great job in this episode also playing up some subtle moments on reflecting on his past and trying to move on in his life. There are some great moments his character gets which is setting the stage for an exciting arc for him in this series.
Other than that, there’s not much to say about the episode without really diving into plot specifics. The episode in its 48-minute length successfully sets up the characters while giving small hints to get the audience in. Add in the great performances, action, and directing, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is setting itself to be a great continuation of the MCU. Given Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of the best in the MCU because of its political thriller tone, I’m excited to see the series continue!
